Instantly calm your mind (without using it)
You don’t need to sit cross legged in the lotus position to achieve a sense of calm. Contrary to popular opinion you don’t even need to be in a quiet, gentle and flowing environment. Mindfulness is a state of all encompassing serenity and its not dependent on external stimuli.
Forcing yourself to become calm “or mindful” tends to work against you. The mind cannot process a negative, aggregating the calming process and leaving you in a frustrated mess. Ironically a state of calm is not achieved my stilling the mind. You have to still you body.
Our bodies react on a subconscious level. Subtle details in our body language reflect the tendencies of our monkey mind. Bad posture, delayed presence and unconscious fidgets are natural reactions of a wavering mind. By trying to “calm” the mind with exerted mental strife you only enhance the physical effort, which in turn leads to a more frustrated mind.
Focus on your body as a whole. Even if you are in the middle of a busy intersection or the trading floor, just stand still for a minute. Put everything down, loosen up your hands and feel a conscious energy flow through your body.
Feel your legs, arms and core. Make them still, almost free flowing. Check in with your body and feel yourself grounded. Amazingly your nervous fidgets and negative body language will cease. This in turn will calm your mind allowing you to take that deep long awaited breath, one that washes over you with ultimate stillness.
